Call to Order

The Cottonwood Task Force Committee of School District No. 2, Yellowstone County and High School District No. 2, Yellowstone County, Montana met at St Johns Lillis Center on Monday, December 8th, 2008. David Trost called the meeting to order at 5:35 pm.Committee members present were: Andrea Chambers, Liane Frieders, Summer Gappa, Lee Gibb, Dani Kieckbusch, Jim Majerus, Elizabeth Potter, Mike Stock, David Trost and Steven Wieder. Ex-Officio members present were: Kathy Kelker and Kathy Olson. JGA Architects present were John Eisen, Terral Sukut, Bob Cummings, Randy Anderson and Rich Kimmery

Others present were Stacy Lemelin, Principal at Sandstone School, Administrators in Training - Teri DeRudder and Angie Gray Billings Gazette Reporter: Becky Shay

David began the meeting by explaining the building of and the use of the Lillis Center.

Public Communication – none

John Eisen asked Kathy Kelker for comments on the task of members. She responded by explaining that the last elementary schools built in Billings was in 1986. Being involved in planning this new school is an exciting opportunity – that this is a “big deal” fro Billings. The community has a history of not passing mill levies and bond issues for construction. The plan must be for a building that will last for decades and have a flexible enough design to shift with changing student and classroom needs. Our obligation and our inspiration are to do it well.

John then divided everyone into 2 groups to brain storm on a new school design. The rules were that there were no bad ideas.

After a couple of hours the groups were brought back together to present their ideas.

Some of the common ideas were:

-Community access and use

-Bus drop off

-Parking lot safety

-Pods or wings to divide grade levels

-Use of outside lighting

John explained that he and the other architects would work on the ideas presented and have rough plans drawn up at the next meeting on January 12th at 6 pm at the Lillis Center, 2429 Mission Way.

Kathy Kelker moved to approve the minutes from the meeting on November 24th and Summer Gappa second them.

There being no other business, David Trost adjourned the meeting at 8:50 pm
