Cottonwood Task Force Minutes – January 12th, 2009

Call to Order

The Cottonwood Task Force Committee of School District No. 2, Yellowstone County and High School District No. 2, Yellowstone County, Montana met at St Johns Lillis Center on Monday, January 12th, 2008. David Trost called the meeting to order at 6 pm. Committee members present were: Andrea Chambers, Liane Frieders, Summer Gappa, Lee Gibb, Dani Kieckbusch, Elizabeth Potter, Mike Stock, David Trost and Steven Wieder. Ex-Officio members present were: Kathy Kelker and Kathy Olson. JGA Architects present were John Eisen, Terral Sukut, Bob Cummings, Randy Anderson and Rich Kimmery

David Trost opened the meeting by letting everyone know that the Cottonwood Task Force is to host a neighborhood public meeting to share the progress that has been made on the school project. It was suggested to have the meeting at the central location of the Lincoln Center. A date for that meeting was not set.

John Eisen informed the members of an upcoming presentation by Education guru, Raymond McNulty on “The Changing World – Future Trends and Challenges in Education” that will be on January 20th at MSU-B.

John then asked us “Where we are in this process?” He explained that he wanted us to split into our two groups and review the architect’s design for our group. We would then come back together to look at both designs for a step-by-step discussion with the objective of what works and what doesn’t work in each of the plans to accomplish our goal.

After we had come back together from our individual groups, we reviewed each of the plans and a 3D power point view of the exterior of each. We then voted on the plan that the members liked the most. After that we went through and looked at what could be done to improve that plan. They are as follows:

- Add breakout areas for first grades classrooms.

- Have breakout areas right outside classroom doors and be visible from the classroom.

- Use the parking lot plan from the other school design because in the vision for this school includes a high volume of volunteers and community building use.

- Roof structure designed for expansion and outside break out areas designed for ease of enclosure.

- Shift the court in the gym and add viewer seating.

- Move music room away from classrooms - - possibly switch health room and music room.

- Keep cubbies out of hallways.

- Possible reduction in size of the media center.

- Possible reduction in size of Family Resource Center but keep in same place.

- It was questioned as to whether we needed to have a designated computer lab or should the room be used for computer cart storage area.

Kathy Kelker informed and invited all members to attend the Board Meeting on January 19th at 5:30 for an informative study session. She asked that a presentation of our preliminary design be done at the beginning of that meeting. Terrall Sukut agreed to do a 20 minute presentation in that meeting which will be televised.

David Trost made a motion to approve the minutes from the December 8th meeting with a second by Summer Gappa.

The next meeting will be held on January 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Johns Lillis Center 2429 Mission Way. The focus of this meeting will be planning the presentation and marketing our design at an upcoming neighborhood public meeting. It was suggested to have this public meeting in the Lincoln Center’s Board Room due to the central location.

There being no further business, David adjourned the meeting at 8:30 pm.
