coen Posted March 10, 2009 Report Share Posted March 10, 2009 Cottonwood Task Force Public Community Meeting Minutes Will James Middle School Cafeteria – February 18, 2009 The Cottonwood Task Force Committee of School District No. 2, Yellowstone County and High School District No. 2, Yellowstone County, Montana met at Will James Middle School cafeteria on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 7pm for a Public Community Meeting. Steven Wieder welcomed approximately 70 people and thanked them for attending this informational meeting. The Agenda for the night included a presentation on the following topics: -The School District Mission and Vision -The Task Force Mission and Direction -The Community Needs -The Elements of an Effective Facility -The New Facility -Did the design capture the elements? -The Next Steps. -Question and Answer Time Highpoints of the topics on the agenda were: -Schools have historically followed need. -Hundreds of students in School District 2 are displaced from non-contiguous boundaries -165 kindergartners are currently attending schools outside their neighborhood The presentation included maps of the current school district boundary map and a map from the city showing the current and future residential growth in Billings. The public was then asked to work in groups and answer the question: “What facility features make a new school effective?” Some of their comments are as follows: -Technology in the classroom -Gym and cafeteria separate -Community friendly -Parking separate from the children’s access to the building -Playground -Air circulation -Flexibility -Growth John Eisen and Terry Sukut from JGA Architects then unveiled and explained the school building site and the new school design.
