DVD Presentation – Michigan Action for Healthy Kids

After the committee members introduced themselves, Virginia Mermel presented a short video presentation provided by the State of Michigan that lays out the physical, mental and exercise related issues pertaining to childhood obesity along with some of the national averages and the latest government studies.

School Healthy Surveys

Virginia Mermel informed the committee that 17 out of 28 schools responded to the School Health Survey, hopefully all schools will eventually respond. Virginia Mermel stressed the importance of baseline data in order to build awareness in the schools.

Rob Luft sent an email expressing his concerns with middle school students spending their lunch money at the “Snack Shack” and not on the regular lunch. He was also concerned that this does not comply with our healthy schools goals. Bette Hunt explained that healthier foods have been added and parents can lock their children out from purchasing from the Snack Shack Bette Hunt will provide the committee with the percent of students that use the Snack Shack at the next meeting.

Rachel Stagg would like to see the SHAC committee educate the students and have them take healthy lifestyles on themselves. The main focus should be on students in grades K-6. The number one issue is to get staff, administration, teachers and principals on board in order to make this lifestyle change work.

Shape-Up Kids and Shape Up Montana

Karen Gall and Susie Eadeswood presented a power point presentation on “Big Sky Fit Kids” program and “Shape Up Montana”. Virginia Mermel suggested that the SHAC committee endorse and encourage the programs. Kip Farnum made a motion and was seconded by Bernie Mason that the SHAC committee endorse the “Big Sky Fit Kids” program and “Shape Up Montana programs. The motion passed unanimously.

Thomas Harper told the committee that he would visit with Kathy Olson and Scott Anderson regarding the schools participation in the programs.

Respectfully submitted:
