curnowc
PROCEEDINGS OF THE SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL School District No. 2, Yellowstone County High School District No. 2, Yellowstone County Billings, Montana January 16, 2007 The School Health Advisory Council met Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 4:00 pm in room 213 at Lincoln Center. Virginia Mermel presided over the meeting. Attending were Kathy Aragon, Bette Hunt, Bernie Mason, Bev McHugh, Ann Nichols, Robert Roe, Kip Farnum. Guests included Dayle Hayes and Pat Bellinghausen. Resignation Virginia Mermel, School Health Advisory Chairperson, announced to the committee that she received a letter of resignation from committee member Heather Elkin. Heather’s busy schedule has prohibited her from attending meetings. Approval of Minutes Virginia Mermel made a motion to approve the minutes from the October 10, 2006 and December 12, 2006 meetings. Motion to approve the minutes passed unanimously. Dale Hayes, MS, RD Guest Speaker Dale Hayes provided a power point presentation on “Creating Healthy School Environments in Billings” during which she shared low-cost and free ways to improve school health practices that have been implemented by school districts throughout the US. Key tips from Dayle’s presentation include: 1) Schedule significant changes to school menus and vending machine content to coincide with the beginning of a new school year. This way the changes are less obvious. 2) Often, it is best not to advertise the fact that changes to school food and activity patterns have been made for health reasons; kids in particular tend to resist changes based on health concerns. 3) Many school districts have made significant improvements in school health policies through a series of well thought out and executed “baby steps.” 4) Publicize success stories. One of the many exciting SD-2 school wellness events taking place this year is Ponderosa Elementary School’s participation in the USDA Healthier US School Challenge. Bette Hunt, director of Sodexho is fine-tuning the school menu to make sure it meets all USDA nutrition criteria. Sodexho and Billings Action For Healthy Kids, which Dayle, chairs, are planning several ways to publicize this event in order to inspire other schools to follow suit. Bette Hunt - Sodexho Bette Hunt provided the committee with informational statistics pertaining to the Snack Shacks at the Middle Schools. She also provided lists of the Healthy Initiatives that have been implemented into the Billings Public Schools in the past few years. Upcoming Meeting Virginia Mermel told the committee that at the next meeting she is hoping to start synthesizing the ideas from the last few meetings into an action plan the SHAC can send to the SD-2 Board. Respectfully submitted: ____________________________ Virginia Mermel, Chair ____________________ Cindy Curnow, Recorder NEXT MEETING SCHEDULED FOR 4:00 P.M.
